Thermal wing, hike & fly glider, and mini wing all in one: for over 14 years, the PI series has been the epitome of versatility and lightness. Now in its fourth generation, the PI offers a unique combination of minimal weight, maximum fun, and impressive performance. And it’s lighter than ever, available in a new size 14 starting at just 1.65 kg. Try all sizes now at your ADVANCE dealer.
In the thermaling range of up to 4.5 kg/m2 projected wing loading the PI ULS with its well balanced canopy is easy to fly, offering maximum passive safety. In this range the PI ULS is suitable for beginners and leisure pilots.
The Hike & Fly range – projected wing loading between 4.5 and 5 kg/m2 – is the right choice for those who like to walk up with light equipment and have some dynamic fun on the flight down.
In the Mini Wing Range with a projected wing loading of 5 kg/m2 and up, the PI ULS is clearly an action wing. It requires a very experienced pilot who flies actively and can sort out wing disturbances almost before they happen. The extremely compact wing is also suitable for Climb & Fly projects.
Depending on its wing loading the PI ULS makes different demands on the pilot. The higher the loading the more challenging the flying characteristics and handling skill requirements become. Small wings are fundamentally more agile, lively, and demanding to fly, even when flown at their normal wing loadings. You can see the different piloting requirements as a function of wing loading in the adjacent table.
“The PI ULS is a fun little speedster for hike & fly adventures. In the larger sizes and with less wing loading, it displays good-natured launch and flight characteristics, making it ideal for flight training.”
“For Throw & Go launches, the PI ULS 14 only needs a few square meters of space. The canopy fills very quickly and remains stable above the pilot even in light winds.”
“Proven features such as material mix and handling remain unchanged. New features include an even easier launch, more speed, noticeably better lift development, and plenty of energy. A real fun machine.”
Technology & Features
The heart of the PI ULS is the filigree internal structure, which was first developed for the OMEGA ULS. Benefitting from the experience of countless competitions, we have perfected maximum possible rib cut-outs (micro cross-ports) as well as the complex inner structure we call Sliced Diagonals. ULS also uses only the lightest materials including “Nitinol-Rods”.
These ultra-light components are made from a super-elastic nickel-titanium alloy, and provide balanced, chordwise mass distribution from the leading edge across the wing upper surface. These rods significantly reduce both packed volume and overall weight, and resist deformation even under heavy loading.
To prevent the paraglider from slipping off in steep or slippery terrain (Snow), “Holding Pins” can be attached to the new loops on the PI ULS using a short string. To avoid damaging the paraglider, we recommend removing the “Holding Pins” before packing it up. “Holding Pins” are not included in the delivery package and you must arrange them yourself. We recommend eco-friendly golf tees.
The PI ULS line set is extremely length-stable and retains above-average tensile strength, even after many flights. Unsheathed Pro Dry lines are colour-coded and 60% more water-repellent than previous-generation lines.
The 14 m² size comes with the ultralight riser as standard. For the 16 and 18 m² sizes it can be ordered as an option.
